What are cookies?
Cookies are small text files stored on your device when you visit a website. Some items that behave similarly, such as browser localStorage entries, are also covered by this policy even though they are not technically cookies.
How Outlain uses cookies
Essential cookies are vital for the correct operation of Outlain. In particular, the Spec Generation pipeline (our core product feature) runs in your authenticated session and relies on the session cookies below. Without them you cannot sign in, your generation run cannot be attributed to your account, and results cannot be persisted back to your project.
We use a minimal set of cookies and browser storage, all of which are strictly necessary for the site to function or directly tied to features you activate yourself. We do not use cookies for advertising, analytics, or cross-site tracking.

Cookie categories
Essential cookies are required for the site to function. Without them you cannot sign in or use any authenticated feature. Because they are strictly necessary, they cannot be disabled inside the app. You can still block them in your browser, but doing so will prevent you from signing in.
Functional items only exist if you activate the underlying feature yourself (by clicking the theme toggle or collapsing the sidebar). Clearing the corresponding item in your browser will simply reset that preference on your next visit.
We do not use advertising, analytics, marketing, personalization, or cross-site-tracking cookies of any kind. If this ever changes, we will update this policy and display a new cookie notice asking for your consent before the new cookies are set.
Third-party services
Outlain does not set third-party cookies on outlain.ai. Several third-party services process data on their own domains under their own privacy policies:
- Stripe handles checkout and subscription management. When you start a purchase, we redirect you to checkout.stripe.com. Any cookies Stripe sets live on their domain, not on outlain.ai.
- Supabase provides our database and authentication backend. Session tokens issued by Supabase are stored as the essential cookies above (set by Outlain, not by Supabase directly).
- Anthropic and OpenAI process content you send to our AI features. These calls are made server-to-server from our backend and do not set any cookies in your browser.
Managing cookies
Because we use only essential and feature-activated cookies, there are no optional cookies for you to disable inside the app. You can still manage all cookies and localStorage entries through your browser settings. Blocking essential cookies will prevent sign-in. Clearing localStorage will reset your theme and sidebar preferences.
Updates to this policy
We may update this Cookie Policy from time to time. Changes will be posted on this page with an updated revision date. If we add any cookie or similar technology that is not strictly necessary or feature-activated (for example analytics, advertising, or third-party embedded services), we will show a new in-app notice and, where required by law, request your consent before the new cookies are set. Continued use of Outlain after a material update constitutes acceptance of the updated policy.
